Competent Deer Stalker Awards

– Intermediate Stalker –

The deer HUB’s popular ‘Competent Deer Stalker Awards’ offer the opportunity for people to progress their skills and knowledge, at their own pace, with a combination of development courses and practical structured training in the field and larder.

Our Level 2 ‘Intermediate Stalker’ award builds on our beginners Level 1 ‘Foundation Skills’ course and is awarded when the deer stalker is able to demonstrate he/she has following skills and is able to perform the following tasks proficiently and unaided:

  • Have good rifle shooting handling skills and firearms safety
  • Stalk on foot unaccompanied and from a high seat
  • Shoot accurately out to 150 yards+ using shooting sticks and a bipod
  • Accurate bullet placement on shot deer
  • Be able to assess land for safe shooting
  • Be able to stalk unaccompanied
  • Identify different deer species, sex and basic age
  • Effectively follow up deer and be able to despatch a wounded deer
  • Hygienically gralloch deer
  • Check a deer’s age, condition any diseases present
  • Understand how a larder/chiller is setup and work safely in it
  • Skin and butcher deer into primary parts in the field/larder
  • Pass shooting and multiple-choice theory tests

  • Rifle Maintenance Course
  • High Seat Course
  • Land Appraisal Course
  • Deer Identification Course
  • Field Butchery Training
  • Larder Skinning & Butchery Training

*stalk sessions are charged for separately, as the number required to complete the award is unknown. For Deer HUB members, a number of stalks is included in their membership package which may be used for this award.

  • Mentored, one on one training with one of our in house professionally qualified instructors/full time deer managers
  • Use of a precision rifle/scope, binoculars, all ammunition and stalkers equipment

  • Competent Deer Stalker Intermediate Stalker Certificate

*A basic knowledge of deerstalking and shooting is required for this course, which is suitable for both novices, non FAC certificate holders and deer stalkers with some experience. A Gift Voucher is available to purchase for this course – please call the office to arrange.

Availability | Courses run Monday to Saturday each week throughout the year. Courses can be arranged with as little as 48 hours notice.

Participant Guidelines | Minimum age is 17. We are able to accommodate people with disabilities at some of our venues (please check when booking).

Duration | There is a time limit set of 2 years for this award.

Venues | We use a number of stalk venues and training locations located in the South of England. For people with access to their own land, by arrangement we can also deliver the training stalks at your location, please discuss with the office staff when you call.
